How is IoT revolutionizing manufacturing?

How is IoT revolutionizing manufacturing?

In 2024, the manufacturing industry is anticipated to see economic uncertainty. A persistent shortage of skilled labor and a push for product innovation to achieve net zero emissions goals.

The industry’s focus is currently on advancing technologies, shifting old methods for AI and IoT (Internet of Things), but also enhancing safety and sustainability. Emerging trends in the manufacturing sector include smart factories, giga casting and on-demand manufacturing.

IoT is shaping the manufacturing industry in many ways, promoting efficiency, increasing predictability, optimizing processes and becoming more sustainable than ever. Let’s dive deeper into each process.

1. Efficiency in Manufacturing

IoT devices allow for real-time monitoring of machinery and processes, leading to #optimizedoperations, reduced downtime, and improved resource management.

With access to real-time data, manufacturers will increasingly depend on technological advancements to drive more efficient processes. According to an article by research giant Deloitte, in 2024 smart factories have already integrated advanced technologies such as AI, 5G, and IoT to improve labor productivity, product quality, reduce costs, and enhance efficiency.

2. Predictive Maintenance with IoT

By analyzing data from connected equipment, manufacturers can predict failures before they occur. This helps reduce maintenance costs and minimize unplanned downtime.

Connected sensors can monitor product quality in real-time, identifying defects early and ensuring higher production standards, ultimately leading to improved quality control.

According to experts in the field, industrial manufacturing companies face a complex risk landscape, dealing with challenges such as regulatory changes, supply chain disruptions, geopolitical risks, and compliance pressures.

Last year KPMG said that 56 percent plan to better align risk strategy with business objectives, while 44 percent will improve risk identification and assessment.

3. Enhanced Safety for Manufacturing

IoT solutions can monitor environmental conditions and worker safety, triggering alerts in case of hazardous situations. Nowadays, worker safety in manufacturing has evolved with companies focusing on ergonomics, cyber security, and mental health for remote workers.

IoT is also revolutionizing how manufacturers monitor and manage environmental conditions through air quality control, water safety conditions, and soil health monitoring. All the data is then analyzed to predict any unsafe environments.

4. Customization and Flexibility in Manufacturing

IoT allows for more flexible manufacturing processes, making it possible to quickly adapt production lines to fulfill customized orders.

One of the key industry trends of this decade is on-demand manufacturing, which involves producing goods only when they are needed and in the necessary quantity.

This approach helps minimize waste and energy usage, and it is also more cost-effective for manufacturers. Check out point 6 in this article for more sustainability procedures.

5. Supply Chain Optimization with IoT

With improved visibility across the entire supply chain, IoT is enabling more effective management of inventory, accurate demand forecasting, and efficient logistics operations.

By implementing advanced asset tracking systems, manufacturing facilities can monitor the movement of products both within the factory and throughout the entire supply chain, leading to enhanced collaboration between suppliers and retailers and fostering business expansion.

6. IoT Brings Sustainability to the Manufacturing Industry

IoT plays a crucial role in monitoring and optimizing energy usage, resulting in cost savings and a reduced carbon footprint. Cutting-edge technologies like IoT, AI, and block chain are now being utilized to oversee and improve manufacturing processes, ensuring they are as sustainable as possible.

For instance, IoT sensors can continuously track energy usage and emissions, creating a safer and more efficient environment. Following the enactment of the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) in the US in 2022, nearly 200 new clean technology manufacturing facilities have been announced, representing an investment of $88 billion and the creation of over 75,000 new jobs, according to research by Deloitte.

In conclusion

IoT has proven to be a tremendous help for manufacturers over the last few years. From prediction of risks to improving quality and saving costs, the new technologies are here to stay!
